Snacks: Keep Your Motor Running!

Snack is a funny word to me. When I used to wipe out whole bags of chips or candy at a time—more calories than most people’s dinners—and I was constantly eating between meals without much of a break, was I really snacking? I was always really good at eating—if it was a sport, I could have made the Olympics—and to me, snacking meant “not eating a meal,” so I thought I could have as much as I wanted.

Wow, I didn’t mean to rant. But snacks are such a different idea for me now. Just because they’re smaller than meals doesn’t mean they’re not as important. Not only do small snacks maintain your energy and remind your body that it will get fed every few hours, but they also keep you from reaching a 1 on your Hunger Meter and then overeating.

So now, when my body is running low on high-test fuel, I top off the tank. All you’ll find in my house to snack on now is fresh fruit, trail mix, yogurt, string cheese, hummus, celery and carrots, and protein shake mixes. (Actually, that’s a lot of options.) When that between-meals belly alarm goes off, I reach for one of those. I add lowfat milk, water, or my favorite Powerade Zero, and life is good.

Because we’re on the go all the time, our snacks travel with us. Dad keeps hummus and pita chips in his office refrigerator, and Mom brings trail mix and fresh fruit when we head out to wherever, and we always have a few granola bars in the car in case we’re out all day. If you’re always on the run too, you can do the same thing. For example, you might keep a healthy snack in your book bag to eat between classes or to hold you over if you have a long bus ride home and dinner is a few hours away.

I cannot put into words how good I feel compared to the old days except to say that I feel so good that I had to write this book to share what I’ve learned with you. Trust me—you’ll love the feeling of being full of life rather than full of food, and smart snacking can help you do it!
